MARY'S SUGAR COOKIES

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 cups confectioner's          1 cup butter or margarine
          sugar, sifted                     1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla                  1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour     1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Mix sugar and butter.  Add egg and flavorings; mix thoroughly.  Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting. Stir dry ingredients together and blend in.  Refrigerate 2-3 hours. Heat oven to 375 degrees.  Divide dough in half and roll 3/16 inch thick on lightly floured pastry cloth.  Cut with cookie cutter; sprinkle with sugar. Place on lightly greased baking sheet.  Bake 7-8 minutes or until delicately golden.

YIELD: 5 dozen 2 - 2 1/2-inch diameter cookies.
